    Prospect of White Shrimp Market in 2017

    I. A brief review on the status of white shrimp farming in South China region in 2016


    As a whole the farming area of first-batch shrimps was relatively small in 2016. Around the Tomb-sweeping Day, less than 40% of the shrimp farmers had dropped young shrimps, but they had achieved a relatively high success rate (which was above 70%, among which the success rate of member clients of White Shrimp Farming Industry Alliance was even higher than 80%). Thirdly, the farming area was small. The water source for farming witnessed a short period of recovery and restoration in eco-system. Fourthly, constant innovation and improvement in management mentality and methods of farming, such as the exploration made by Dangjiang in "black water" shrimp farming mode; the innovation of "4.0 benchmark controllable shrimp farming" in higher-place ponds made by members of Hainan White Shrimp Farming Industry Alliance by applying enzyme microorganism enzymolysis. Generally speaking, the first-batch shrimp farming in 2016 has brought a surprise of harvest, rather than sighing and reflection in front of the success of others.


    The central-batch shrimp and final-batch shrimp farming status of 2016: The farming success rate of first-batch shrimp was relatively high in the western part of Guangdong, Guangxi and eastern line of Hainan; the central-batch shrimp farming was under a state of transition and recovery in the eastern and western lines of Hainan, while efforts were stepped up in the final-batch shrimp farming by dropping more young shrimps. Quite a lot of the young shrimps have grown to big shrimps and will be marketed in several days and before the Spring Festival. From June to August, Guangxi was under a state of continuous hot temperature and little rain and bacteria diseases (mainly white excrement) were relatively serious during the early stage of shrimp farming. As a result, the central-batch and final-batch shrimp farming in Guangxi came to an unsatisfactory end. Now only some shrimp farmers of Beihai begin to farm winter shrimps. In Zhanjiang region, the central-batch shrimp farming is also faced with the havoc of white excrement and diseases under the early stage of farming, so basically it also ended in a failure. Relatively many farmers in the regions of Donghai Island and Naozhou Island began to farm winter shrimps. However, since it was still hot in earlier November, red body disease happened to the shrimps at the early stage of farmers that dropped young shrimps earlier, as a result of which they had to discharge all shrimps and re-drop young ones. This year, the winter farming of shrimps is unprecedented in the regions of Zhanjiang and Beihai Guangxi, which witnesses a significant increase of area and enthusiasm. The farming households have passed safely for 30 days after young shrimps were dropped and have not been hit by diseases across a large area, but slow growth is a common phenomenon. The farming harvest and effectiveness still cannot be predicted. The farming of winter shrimps is going on.


    Generally speaking, there were joy and worry, laughter and smile in white shrimp farming in 2016. The joy lied in the success of first-batch shrimp farming, though it was short. The worry had come from the serious white excrement and diseases and the failure to overcome the difficulty in technical management. It's hard to depict what has brought laughter. The success treats success and failure, gain and loss with smile, for they are not only brave in practice, but also are good at learning and do not follow the beaten track. They dare to deny their original production experience and management methods. They keep innovating in learning and keep developing in innovation. Therefore, they always can find a mentality and method for successful maintenance in cycles of success and failure, and move on. Only two types of shrimp farmers will shed tears. One type of farmers fail to make a harvest in successive years, have backward management ideas, a serious mentality of small-scale production, and have always farmed shrimps with stingy investment and on credit; the other type of farmers make no attempt to make progress, have a poor learning capacity and innovation capacity.


    II. In 2017, the key for white shrimp farming is not starting together (which sounds like 17 in Chinese), but how to start. Now we want to say, to farm shrimps in 2017, please wait for a while and think or reflect calmly for a while and make sufficient preparations before you start. We want to ask you to ascertain the following questions.


    1. How is your harvest from shrimp farming in the recent three years at least, have you earned money? What have you gained and lost? Whether you have succeeded or failed, please make a summary: Is your hard work in shrimp farming worthy over the three years or more? If not, what is the cause?


    2. In white shrimp farming, what are the main factors that may cause you to fail? Namely, what are the problems you have encountered that are most difficult to solve and have not been solved until now? Attention: Please do not blame heaven and earth or young shrimps, find out the cause in yourself.


    3. Have you always farmed shrimps on credit or with stingy investment? Ask yourself, how much credit you can overdraft? If you can only continue to farm shrimps on credit in 2017, how confident you are to cash your overdraft credit? Where is your bottom line of controllable risk? How to guarantee it? How many excellent farming resources you can gain with your credit and control capacity to guarantee the success of your farming (like quality water source, fodder, shrimp medicine, payment for goods and credit support from distributors and technical services)?


    4. If you want to continue to farm shrimps in 2017, please firstly correctly position your lowest targets (rather than highest expectable targets): can you earn a little to repay your previous debt, or at least cover your cost and break even? To reach this goal, what are you willing to change?


    5. Have you had a clear control mentality and scheme? To succeed in farming, what controllable preparatory work you need to make? Measure your distance from the success in shrimp farming. Is it the distance in idea or in action? Is it distance in mentality and method, or distance in control and management?


    At present, the white shrimp farming industry has entered a difficult transitional period. Firstly, the transition in the source of young shrimps. Young shrimp companies have stepped up cooperation with international young shrimp companies, trying to realize local incubation of mother shrimps. Secondly, the transition from ageing and acidified extensive large-area muddy ponds to intensive small-area and high-density high-place ponds. Thirdly, the transition from outdoor farming to greenhouse and winter greenhouse farming. The three transitions share a common distinctive feature, namely, increasing capital and technology inputs as basic guarantees. Under such a context of transitions, it appears more important to think about how to start.


    III. How to start? The suggestions given by White Shrimp Farming Industry Alliance to its member clients are as follows.


    Firstly indeed practice controllable shrimp farming management mentality and methods, which are dynamic factors to effectively guarantee the normal growth of white shrimps and the core contents of controllable farming management in the whole course of farming. Shrimps are "fed", not "treated". So you should be willing to spend on the area of "feeding" and consider your medication & nursing schemes and actions from the perspective of fundamentally solving the problems, rather than consider from the perspective of controlling the costs. Otherwise, you will never find a successful way for effective farming. What you only need to do and the first step to move on is to ensure that you can make your shrimps grow big, rather than consider whether it will cost you too much and whether you can earn money. Otherwise, you may follow a wrong mentality and method from the beginning.


    Secondly, you need to grasp the key points and conduct a controllable management from main areas of key links and problems: young shrimps are the basic assurance and risk guarantee which determine whether your shrimps can grow big. In the selection of young shrimps, we have always followed a principle: We won't select the expensive, but the right. You should choose young shrimps that have been tested (special notes: If member clients can't find a place or method for testing, they can contact with our alliance platform). In the area of protection and nursing control, we have always advocated the following mentality and method: based on prevention, aided by treatment, prevention and control going together, combination of mixture taken orally and splashing for external use, and making equal efforts in raising and keeping the quality of water and shrimps. In the outdoor farming of first-batch shrimps in 2017, we should start from prevention and control and focus on three areas of work, namely, detoxification, controlling bacteria and stabilizing water quality. We have kept stressing that how to correctly treat and use fodder and shrimp medicine is an issue of overall importance and the key to success. Young shrimps, shrimp medicine and fodder are three indispensible elements in shrimp farming, in which young shrimps are the main element, and the other two elements serve the first element. Fodder provides basic nutrients and medicine provides prevention, disease treatment and healthcare, which is functional treatment based and plays a role of doctor. Spoken from this functional positioning, medicine deserves special attention, which is as important as fodder. You should be clear about an issue: fodder provides the foundation of nutrients for the healthy growth of white shrimps. Without fodder, you cannot farm shrimps with a high density. However, fodder is also the largest source of pollution to the water body of ponds. Fodder remains and excrement of shrimps account for around 80% of the organic matter pollutants of the whole pond. If there is no shrimp medicine to improve and treat, how should you deal with it? High-place ponds have a pollutant discharge outlet at their bottom, while muddy bottom ponds have no pollutant discharge pipes or pollutant pumping equipment. If so, how can you farm your shrimps well? Therefore, fodder and medicine, especially medicine for improvement are closely related.


    Thirdly, joint prevention and control, combination of treatment and nursing should be adopted in dealing with problems and diseases. Problems should be solved systematically and fundamentally rather than partially. Stress is the root of all diseases. The largest problem of outdoor farming is the stress caused by climate change. The diseases incurred by response to stress are the basic areas and starting point for our nursing and protection control. Secondly the infectious diseases. To indeed eliminate, prevent and control stress diseases, we must solve problems systematically, which involves systematic work such as water body regulation and maintenance and animal healthcare in areas such as bacteria and algae maintenance, detoxification, bacteria control and nutrition immunology. This is a process of joint prevention and control. It cannot be solved by simply using some medicine or doing some work well. As to treatment, firstly we should consider its combination with nursing. Nursing can guarantee that problems are solved and diseases are treated effectively, while treatment is to thoroughly solve the problems. In the farming of white shrimps, without the combination and basic function of "nursing", "treatment" usually cannot reach the targets and even go at the opposite direction. For example, to solve the slow growth of shrimps poisoned by an excessively high concentration of ammonia nitrogen and nitrite, the method of treatment is to splash energy tartaric acid for external use and oral taking of mixture of enzyme microorganism + attractant zymosan to eliminate and relieve toxins. However, if you did not further regulate the water and raise algae and decompose the ammonia nitrogen and nitrite in the water body from the area of nursing, the treatment effect will usually be in vain. Another example, in treating the stress + poisoning diseases caused by fallen algae after a rain, the effective treatment method is splashing energy tartaric acid + detoxification Vitamin C. However, if you did not use nutrient solution of enzyme microorganism + carbon source to regulate the bacterial and algae phase and timely rescue the fallen algae in the second step, the diseases will be inevitable in the end.


    In general, for the outdoor farming of white shrimps in 2017, the largest uncontrollable factor is the climate and the largest problem is response to stress.
